2005 & 2006 Studies Prove
Driver Ed in a Box®
Produces the Safest Drivers
(Over 8 times safer!)

A review of the driving records of the graduates of the parent-taught driver education course, Driver Ed in a Box®, shows that our 16 year old graduates have a collision rate of only 1.7%.  Studies show that 16 year old drivers in the State of Texas using other methods of driver education have a collision rate of 11.4%.

What is a “collision rate”?
A collision rate is the number of collisions reported to the Department of Public Safety as reflected on the individual driver records divided by the number of licensed drivers in that category (in this case 16 year old drivers).  That number is then multiplied by 100 to convert it to a percentage.

Texas Statistics

In the online version of the Texas Department of Public Safety's Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents for 2001, it states that 141,357 licensed 16 year old drivers had 16,113 reported collisions producing a collision rate of 11.4%.

Driver Ed in a Box® Statistics

In April of 2005 a random sample of 1,009 of Driver Ed in a Box® 16 year old graduates’ driving records were pulled directly from the Department of Public Safety’s records. The Driver Ed in a Box® 16 year old graduates had only 14 collisions producing a collision rate of 1.4%.

In a follow-up study in 2006 of another 999 randomly selected driving records of Driver Ed in a Box® 16 year old graduates, the graduates had only 21 collisions producing a collision rate of 2.1%.

By combining the 2005 & 2006 studies, we conclude that Driver Ed in a Box® 16 year old graduates currently have a collision rate of 1.7%.

17 Year Old Drivers

The DPS Statistics book referenced above shows 181,014 licensed drivers aged 17 had 19, 517 collisions producing a collision rate of 10.8%

In 2005, a random sample of 553 records of 17 year old Driver Ed in a Box® graduates show only 5 collisions, producing a collision rate of 1%.

A 2006 follow-up of 999 Driver Ed in a Box® graduates driving records randomly selected shows only 1 collision producing a collision rate of 0.1%.

Summary of 16 year old drivers’ comparative collision rate:

Driver Ed in a Box® graduates: 1.7%

All other driver education graduates: 11.4%.

Conclusion: Driver Ed in a Box® graduates are
significantly safer drivers.
